Love Again (2023)

rife with banality

(The following is a lost ad from The Hallmark Channel)

LOST:

Recently, one of our vaults was raided and we lost access to a film. That film is Love Again. It came out earlier this year, but should be easy to spot, for how it is masquerading itself as a rom com.

The film is rife with banality, so it should be easy to find. It starts with Mira (Priyanka Chopra) meeting in a coffee shop with her boyfriend John (Arinzé Kene), in a truly blissful relationship. This of course, lasts less than five minutes, as John leaves the shop and is killed by a drunk driver (we don’t see the accident, only Mira’s facial reaction to sound effects).

Fast forward two years, and Mira is still in mourning over John (she later opens his stuff, and finds out he was about to propose to her). Her new way of coping (after a weird blind date that I will get to in a bit) is to say all the stuff to him she wish she could have by texting his old number. As the script (whoops, I mean fate) would have it, a thunderstorm happens one night, knocks out the power, and the texts fall into the hands of Rob (Sam Heughan), a journalist (duh). When he meets Mira, he of course does not tell her about the texts.

In his endeavor, Rob is supplied with two sources of help: the obligatory work buddies (one is gay, of course) and Celine Dion (he is doing a piece on her.) Of course, the film does have new songs sung by the legendary singer.

You should be able to discover the film by the obvious aspects:

  1. Actors of talent given a script that reminds us why the WGA is on strike.
  2. Songs (that are not bad on their own) placed uncannily in the film (all by Dion).
  3. Two lead actors who, while not bad, have virtually no chemistry.
  4. Attempts at comedy that result in zero laughs.
  5. A plot with too many incomprehensible events to count.
  6. Obvious attempts at trying to get the audience to question will they/won’t they

Parents, if you kids happen to stumble upon this film, we recommend they are not under the pre-teen age, as there is some swearing and some sexual situations. It is also recommended they watch something else that is of much, much, much higher quality.

As for the aforementioned blind date, it supplies a cameo for Nick Jonas (Chopra’s husband). It says something when Nick Jonas is the most interesting part of a film, and is in it for no more than ten minutes.

If found, please return, and we will dispose of it properly.
